Now in a detailed, illustrated Second Edition, this book has two purposes in mind. One, to give you a “conceptual” idea of how brewing works so that you are not following a series of inexplicable instructions, but actually brewing beer. Second, to give you an overall picture of what you need to get started and what you will purchase as you graduate from your first utmost affordable homebrewer’s kit. You will see it grow it piece by piece, and you will eventually reach sudden and radical “graduation” points. The first is moving from a bottling to a kegging system, the second, moving from a malt-extract process to an “all-grain” process—most likely, but not necessarily in that order. 20,000 words.

When people ask me how I got into Homebrewing, I have always had the same answer, “Beer is expensive!” This garners a laugh each time. But I’m dead serious. Not only is beer expensive, but very good beer is very expensive! And very good beer from places very far away from my own Beer-Mecca hometown of Portland, Oregon, are very very expensive, if even able to survive the voyage from halfway around the world without being ruined with some kind of pasteurization or other preservative process. (Yes, Guinness Stout served in Ireland does not taste like it does here in the states as an exported product!)

From the moment I fell in love with Belgian Ales, I realized I would be coughing up more than $10 for a four pack of some of my favorites, such as Chimay Tripel or Hoegaarden Wit. However, I could make a reasonable Belgian beer of my own for a fraction of that price if I could just brew it myself!

Hence, I began a long and arduous process of becoming the best homebrewer I could, in order to make my favorite styles of beer to the best of my ability. Since that time, I have been a member of three local homebrew clubs, the president of the Oregon Brew Crew, a certified BJCP judge, and a member of the American Homebrewers Association. And what I have noticed is that practically every homebrewer goes through the same process of evolution.

The purpose of this book is to guide the first-time homebrewer through his or her first few years of brewing, to explain the most cost-effective way to get started, the things to worry about and things to blow off, and as many secrets as I can pack into this short introduction to the wonderful world of Homebrew.

We begin with the simple extract brew system equipment, then the best strategy for keeping yourself in beer year-round. Next, we take a general look at the actual brewing process. The final portion of this book goes into more advanced systems, beginning with Kegging, then All Grain, and finally a 10-gallon outdoor “keggle” system.

Still not convinced you are ready to jump into homebrewing? Well, if cost is your concern like it was mine, head over to my website, http//www.supercenternation.com and click on the link for the interactive Homebrew Expense Calculator, play around, and see for yourself!

Other reviewers are giving this guide a hard time over its supposedly light contents. I disagree. It is filled with practical advice that is useful to an intermediate level brewer like myself and would be even more useful to new brewers.

I have brewed over three distinct stages of my life and have found the technology, ingredients and techniques available to the home brewer have evolved considerably at each stage. My first go was as a student. I brewed by the simplest means possible and produced cheap but drinkable beer. Later when I was in the early years of employment I tried all grain brewing and made better beers but struggled with the availability of equipment. This booklet comes along as I find myself in the third stage of my brewing career. I have a bit more money available to me and a bit more time to build or buy the equipment needed to produce really good all grain brews. This guide covers the tools people are using now to brew good all grain brews. I would say it is worth paying for so if its still on offer for free you could do alot worse than adding it to your kindle.

Nothing here to surprise. I thought I would be getting something useful, but not the case. Add says 33 pages and that's it. Save your money.
Great beer brewing guide.
Thanks for the blog. This is not a book. If you were expecting some sort of designs, drawings, ideas, forget about it. This is really a website of ideas written into a 'book'....not impressed. I was expecting some actual recommendations on fittings etc, instead i got 33 pages of "spend $1000 bucks and you'll be able to brew 30 gallons in 8hrs like me". You can find all this and more on the Internet for free, and that is frugal. Save your $2.99, not recommended.
good
The book provides updated information that the older books like "How to Brew" cannot, simply because some products did not exist when they were released. It is riddled with grammatical problems, and some sentences do not make much sense on the first read. The book needs to be edited better.
